Lady Owls earn another D9 finals appearance, Olean Girls soccer bows out of postseason

BRADFORD, PA — As they chase their seventh consecutive District 9 Championship, the Bradford girls soccer team took a step towards the title with a 2-0 win over Clearfield.

In Class 4A, there has been one superpower for nearly a decade: the Lady Owls. Coming into the postseason this year as the second seed, Bradford hosted the No. 3 Lady Bison and turned to their star sophomore Alyssa Mangold to help pave the way to the finals.

After a scoreless first half, Mangold got hot, scoring in the 65th and 70th minute. Miley Swanson got the first assist while Bella Prince recorded the second. In goal, Maddy Stark held the Lady Bison off the scoreboard with six saves.

Following the win over Clearfield, Bradford will face DuBois once again for the D9 title. That game will go down on Monday at Brockway at 5 p.m.

SECTION VI CLASS A FIRST ROUND

Iroquois 2, Olean 1

IROQUOIS, NY – The No. 12 Lady Huskies fell to fifth seeded Iroquios in the first round of the Class A postseason. 

While Olean (1-15-1) got on the board first with a goal from Ava Finch, the Lady Redhawks responded three minutes later. First, Molly Mescall punched in a goal to even the score before Gianna Gillette put Iroquois ahead in the 39th minute. Through the second half, the scoreboard would go unchanged, ending Olean’s season. 

In goal, Emma Edwards tallied 14 saves through 80 minutes of play. 

“I’m very proud of these girls. We played a really good game,” said Olean head coach Dan Freeman.

VOLLEYBALL

PORTVILLE, NY – The Portville volleyball team closed out their regular season on Wednesday with a hard-fought sweep over St. Mary’s of Lancaster, winning 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23 to secure an undefeated season.

Mia Rhinehart had 20 digs and three aces, Laney Vincent had 13 kills and 13 digs, Adriana Ensell had nine kills and six digs and Ali Haynes finished with 11 kills and 10 digs. Running the floor for the Lady Panthers was Adelyn Walker with 33 assists and two aces. 

Portville (16-0) now enters the postseason where they will look to earn another Section VI title before making a run at their fifth consecutive New York State Championship.

DISTRICT 9 CLASS 3A SEMIFINALS

Clearfield 3, Bradford 2

BRADFORD, PA – Entering the District 9 Class 3A postseason as the No. 2 seed, the Lady Owls fell to the Lady Bison in five sets, ending their season in front of their home crowd. 

Sonny Diehl ended with 13 kills, Addison Carter had six and Lilly Wells had 12 assists.
