RED HOUSE — Both Red House Lake and Quaker Lake in Allegany State Park remain closed this weekend due to harmful algae blooms.

Heading into the last week of summer, the beach at Red House Lake was mostly vacant on Friday afternoon despite sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

The harmful algae bloom of blue-green algae is dangerous to humans and pets.

It can cause mild to life-threatening illnesses in humans. Animals can get very sick and get seizures or die from contact with a harmful algae bloom.

Visitors were still canoeing, kayaking, using paddle boats and stand up paddleboards in the lake, and the boat.
