JAMESTOWN, NY – Entering hostile territory as the underdogs, the Salamanca football team bounced back from a tough opening week loss with an upset, defeating Southwestern/Frewsburg 21-12.
Despite going down 6-0 after the initial quarter, Salamanca quickly responded, outsourcing the Trojans 14-6 before the break. While their offense kept firing, their defense halted and counterpunch, holding Southwestern scoreless through the final two quarters.
Conner Seeley led the Warriors from the ground, recording 154 rushing yards on 26 carries and coming away with three touchdowns. He also caught one pass for 31 yards.
Up next, Salamanca (1-1) returns home for another Class C South meeting, this time with Chautauqua Lake/Brocton/Westfield (1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Port Allegany 68, Brookville 13
PORT ALLEGANY, PA – Seeing five Gators enter the endzone, Port remained flawless with another dominating showing on the gridiron.
Once again led by a man on a heater, Kellen Veilleux carried the weight of the Gators’ offense with three touchdowns, 87 rushing yards and 66 receiving yards, all of which are team highs. Isaac Postlewait scored twice, both on the ground where he tallied 46 rushing yards, while Chase Boyd came away with 62 receiving yards and two scores. Completing nine of his 14 tosses down range, Brennan Fillhart threw for 155 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Smethport 38, Bradford 16
BRADFORD, PA – The Hubbers returned to the win column with a blowout win at Parkway Field.
Jude Kisko led Smethport in yards with 148 on the ground, also scoring a pair of touchdowns, while Maddox Dickerson came away with 125 through the air and three touchdowns
Depew 43, Olean 14
DEPEW, NY – Unable to curb their turnover turmoil, the Huskies fell to 0-2 on the season with a road loss to the Wildcats.
Olean’s two touchdowns came from a 15-yard pass from Dom Myers to Mason Hirliman, followed by a three-yard rush from Myers later on in the evening.
Portville 16, Gowanda/Pine Valley 12
GOWANDA, NY – Despite entering the halftime break down 12-0, the Panthers remained patient and resilient, qualities that ultimately helped them remain undefeated as they took a win in enemy territory.
Through the first two quarters, Gowanda steadily built a cushion, scoring once in each period, albeit, missing both two-point conversions. Although they looked up at a double-digit deficit, Portville just needed an opportunity, which came at the very start of the third quarter.
Kicking off to Gowanda, the Panthers managed to recover a fumble, then taking it back to the endzone off a 25-yard run from Hayden Schappacher. With Portville’s defense holding Gowanda at bay, the Panthers again carved out another window for themselves in the fourth, when Schappacher finished off a prolonged drive with a three-yard score. Seeing an even scoreboard, Portville secured the win with a successful two-point conversion caught over the line from Ethan Miller.
Schappacher ended with 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns, followed by Braxton Clark with 37 receiving yards.
