Letter to the Editor of the Olean Star:

To the Editor:

Our community is under threat, and it is time for the residents of Allegany, Olean, and Portville to take a stand.

Liberty Renewables is moving forward with its proposed Hemlock Hollow Wind Farm, a massive industrial development consisting of 19 turbines stretching up to 650 feet tall across our landscape.

Let us be entirely clear: our opposition is not a blanket rejection of renewable energy. It is an act of self-defense against a deeply ill-sited project. Placing industrial machinery of this immense scale directly on our pristine mountain ridges will permanently fragment local forests, endanger native wildlife, and scar the natural skyline that defines the Enchanted Mountains.

The consequences for our neighborhoods are real and severe. Turbines of this height introduce permanent disruptions, including shadow flicker and low-frequency acoustic noise.

Furthermore, the heavy construction required on our ridges poses an undeniable threat to the delicate water wells and natural springs that hundreds of nearby homeowners rely on. Our property values, our quiet rural lifestyle, and our environment should not be sacrificed for the financial gain of an outside developer.

To organize our collective voice, we have formed the Save Our Enchanted Mountain Ridges Alliance (Allegany-Olean-Portville). We are holding an informational meeting this coming Monday, Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Olean Public Library Conference Room.

We encourage all concerned neighbors to join us to present concerns, become informed, share information, to sign our petition, join our alliance, and attend upcoming town board meetings.

We demand that our local town boards utilize all available zoning and legislative powers to protect their constituents and deny permits for this project.

We must protect our ridges, preserve our valley, and save our home before our skyline is lost forever.

Sincerely,

Kathy Boser

Town of Allegany Resident

On behalf of the Save Our Enchanted Mountain Ridges Alliance
