FREDONIA, NY – After losing their star outside hitter mid-match, the Portville volleyball team was in a jam. While they held a 1-0 set advantage already, Fredonia was far from beaten and they were far from victorious.
However, leaning on their chemistry and trust, the Panthers managed to stay dialed in, gutting out a sweep over the Hillbillies.
True to their reputation, Portville came out hot, swiftly taking the first set of the night at 25-13. However, in the second, Gaitley Maiolo was removed from the contest due to a jewelry infraction, leaving the Panthers to adjust and shuffle players into the rotation on a whim.
“When you lose your go-to person, it’s very easy to go into a shell and kind of fall apart,” said Portville head coach Paul Mann. “They did the complete opposite. I saw a level of grit that I haven’t seen in a long time.”
Facing a Fredonia rising wave, the Panthers scraped together a second set victory, winning 25-22. However, the Hillbillies clung to life. Trading blows back and forth in an elimination set, the two squads battled through to overtime, with the Panthers ultimately pulling out a decisive 26-24 match-sealing victory.
“Koudous to Fredonia. They’re very well coached and they fought us hard. We got them in the first set and then they kind of punched us in the mouth,” said Mann. “In my mind, there’s not really a loser besides what’s on the scoreboard. Fortunately, we came out on top.”
Leigha Stives emerged with a team-high 10 kills alongside two aces, four digs and a block, while Ava Scanlon came away with eight kills, 10 digs and an ace. Marissa Carls facilitated the floor with 33 assists, three digs and a block.
At 2-1, Portville next takes the road for a Friday meeting with Orchard Park in hostile territory. That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Allegany-Limestone 3, Ellicottville 2
ELLICOTTVILLE, NY – Taking to the court for the first time this season, the Allegany-Limestone volleyball team’s first test would be a tough one. Forced into a fifth-and-final, the Gators narrowly managed to outlast Ellicottville, escaping hostile territory with their first victory of the year.
Against the Eagles, who had already seen two games this season, A-L came out slow, dropping the first two sets 25-16 and 25-17. However, they quickly countered, taking the largest set win of the night at 25-13 before pulling off a 25-17 equalizer. Staring down the win-or-go-home final set, the Gators’ resiliency maintained, eeking out a 15-12 victory to complete the comeback.
Earning a day’s rest, A-L will get back to action on Thursday when they are welcomed home for a match against Randolph. That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Bradford 3, Punxsutawney 0
BRADFORD, PA – Hosting the Chucks, the Lady Owls tallied their back-to-back sweeps, winning 25-17, 25-18 and 25-15 in front of their home crowd.
Aliya Corignani recorded 13 assists, five aces and seven kills, followed by Emma Pilon with six kills.
Bradford returns to action on Wednesday, seeing Elk County Catholic on the road at 7:30 p.m.
Otto-Eldred 3, Olean 0
DUKE CENTER, PA – In a cross-boarder meeting, the Lady Terrors kept their undefeated streak alive, beating the Huskies 25-19, 25-19 and 25-16.
Rayel Hakes and Jahden Smith both finished with eight kills, with Hakes tallying three blocks and ten digs and Smith coming away with eleven digs in the win. Emma Button recorded 25 assists and six digs, followed by Remy McDivitt with four blocks and ten digs.
O-E moves on to host Galeton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Catt-Little Valley 3, Salamanca 0
CATTARAUGUS, NY – Traveling to see the Timberwolves, the Warriors faced their first defeat of the season via clean sweep.
Though keeping stride with Catt-Little Valley, Salamanca was unable to notch an advantage, losing 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21, falling to 1-1 after the loss.
Salamanca will look to bounce back when returning home to host Gowanda on Thursday.
Girl’s Soccer
Bradford 8, Brockway 1
BRADFORD, PA – A career-high and career milestone from Alyssa Mangold carried the Lady Owls to a definitive win over the Lady Rovers.
Reaching the triple digit career goal mark was made possible from an offensive eruption from Mangold, who scored seven goals throughout the win. Austin Douglass came away with Bradford’s lone other goal, while Cami Sheeley finished with three assists. Karissa Chamberlain had two assists while Miley Swanson had one.
Improving to 2-1, the Lady Owls will stay at home for their Thursday contest against Warren at 6 p.m.
Olean 3, Bolivar-Richburg 2, OT
BOLIVAR, NY – After notching her first in the opening minutes of play, Addison Crosson’s second goal of the night carried the Huskies to an overtime thriller over the Wolverines.
Crosson finished with two goals and an assist while Alivia Miller scored once. In goal, Alaina Hirliman saw 18 shots and saved 16.
At 1-1, Olean will next see Catt-Little Valley on Monday at home. That game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
Falconer/CV/MG 3, Portville 1
PORTVILLE, NY – The Panthers dropped their season-opening game of the season despite holding a first-half lead.
Grace Gariepy broke open the action with the initial goal of the day, however, from there, Falconer responded in the second. Rattling off three unanswered scores, they completed the comeback and downed the Panthers.

Bradford 1, Brockway 1, Draw
BRADFORD, PA – Returning to their home field, the Owls dropped to 1-2-1 as they were unable to find a go-ahead goal over the Rovers.
Bradford’s lone goal of the night came from Luciano Santiago off an assist from Gave Schuster. In the net, Lucas Sokoly finished with seven saves.
The Owls travel to see North East High on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Girl’s Swimming
Frewsburg/Falconer 93, Salamanca 91
In their second meet of the season, the Warriors posted 17 personal bests despite coming just shy of back-to-back wins.
Kynleigh Wass took first in the 200 freestyle, Ella Martens took first in the 100 fly and Addison Follman won the 100 backstroke. Salamanca also took gold in the 200 medley relay, competing with Karrah Furlong, Molly Duhan, Ava Chriss and Addison Follman. Wass, Chriss and Follman also took first in the 400 freestyle relay alongside Julianna Smith.
Annabell LeRoy set two PRs in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, followed by Layla Reitnauer (50 free), Ruby Sundown (50 free and 100 back), Phoebe Redey (50 free) and Makenna McCormick (100 fly).
Girl’s Tennis
Salamanca 5, Dunkirk 0
Finding a clean sheet, the Warriors swept through Dunkirk for their first league win of the year.
Throughout the day, Salamanca cleaned up easily. Betsy Levya and Marlena Avila took the first singles (6-1 and 6-0), followed by Kurryn Glowacki and Andrea Nye in the second doubles (6-1, 6-0). In the doubles, Sage Huff and Mimi McComber took on Avery Green and Kiomara Lopez (6-0, 6-0), while Keria Bova and Fiona McKune beat Emma Finch and Isabella Melendez (6-0, 6-0). Eden McKune and Paxtynn Kerswill beat Reynaliz Negron Flores and Stephanie Moore (6-1, 6-1) in the third doubles.
