SALAMANCA — Penn-York’s 57th season got underway Monday at Elkdale Country Club with 105 golfers taking to the course on a brutally hot day.
Fast, firm greens kept scores elevated across all divisions, and the field had to grind it out from start to finish.
Owen Wright (Cardinal Hills) took the Division I title, shooting a 5-over 75 to hold off Evan Maloney (Chautauqua Golf Club) at 78.
In Division II, David Preston (Caledonia CC) claimed his first Penn-York title with an 82, beating Kael Riekofsky (Smethport CC) (87) by five shots.
Division III produced the day’s signature moment: Gavin Blocher (Bartlett) recorded a hole-in-one during his round, carded a 37, then beat Mason Myers (Kane CC) — who also shot 37 — in a playoff to take the title.
Keegan Smith (Bavarian Hills) put together the most dominant round of the day in Division IV, firing a 34 over nine holes to win going away. Camden Giles (Chautauqua) was second at 42.
In the Girls’ 18-hole Division I, Molly Burnett (Bartlett CC) won with a 110, with Aubrey Resig (Bolivar CC) second at 121. The 9-hole division was taken by Alaina Hirliman (Birch Run) at 46, followed by Alyx Henzel (Bartlett) at 70.

Penn-York’s next stop is Monday, July 13 at Pennhills Country Club. Shirts and hats from Elkdale will be distributed at Pennhills.
