ALLEGANY — Allegany-Limestone Elementary students celebrated Flag Day Friday morning outside the school under mostly sunny skies.

The long-running elementary school tradition included singing the National Anthem and other patriotic songs by members of the third grade class led by elementary music teacher Joy Wilber.

Classes from kindergarten to fifth grade walked out of the front of the school to the bus circle carrying small American flags, which they waved. Some parents and community members joined the observance.

Members of the honor guard of Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 carried the flag to the ceremony.

A member of the honor guard showed Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from Pack 677 and others how to properly fold the flag as the old flag was lowered and a new one raised in front of the school.

District Superintendent Anthony Giannicchi also attended the program, which he said was always very nice to watch.

The Flag Day program has been going on for many years and has become an annual tradition at the elementary school.

Wilber told the students, staff and parents the Flag Day program “is one of the most wonderful things we do.”
