JAMESTOWN — Avenging their mercy rule loss to the Jamestown Tarp Skunks from May 29, the Olean Oilers returned the favor just three days later with a mercy rule victory of their own.
The Oilers were not given a very warm welcome into the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) by the Tarp Skunks, who handed them a 13-3, seven-inning loss in their first-ever game in the league. However, just three days later they showed that they are just as capable of packing a punch, as Olean defeated Jamestown 11-1 in seven innings.
After three scoreless frames to start, the Oilers offense kicked into gear. Using the advantage the Tarp Skunks handed to them with some struggles on the mound, they scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and piled on four in the sixth. A solitary run in the top of the seventh was enough to put the game on ice.
Anthony Radice, who made his way to Olean by way of Bergen Community College, stood out in the win, going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. He was the only Olean batter with multiple hits on the day.
Also assisting in the win was St. Bonaventure’s Conner Vercollone (1-for-1, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 walks), John Carroll’s Thomas Bates (1-for-3, 2 RBI), Mercyhurst’s Darek Staudt (1-for-3, RBI, walk) and Alfred State’s Aiden Cowburn (1-for-2, RBI, walk).
On the mound for the Oilers, St. Bonaventure’s Jaxson Ross went 3.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits. Charleston Southern’s Bryson Huwar and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Anthony Cosme slammed the door shut over the final 3.2 frames, allowing just one hit over that span.
