OLEAN — The conservative Right Thinkers group will rally to support the Save Act, which would require all voters to be American citizens and show photo ID to register to vote in federal elections, Saturday at Lincoln Park.

The “Save America Rally” will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the park. Those attending are encouraged to bring American flags and signs.

“Our Right Thinkers group supports the “Save Act” and  we hope it will become the law of the land – and help the integrity of our elections,” said Connie Wolfinger, one of the founders of the group. “We welcome others coming to America but if they want to participate in elections they should become citizens.”

She added: “Please join us – bring your spouses, kids, grandkids. This will be a peaceful gathering at Lincoln Park in Olean from 3 to 5 on Saturday.

We have some signs for the event and you’re welcome to bring your own – but please, no profanity! Just good old American patriotic type signs.”

The Save Act narrowly passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives in February on a 218-213 party-line vote. It would require documentary proof of citizenship — a birth certificate or passport — when registering in federal elections and require a photo ID at the polls.

The Senate does not currently have the votes to pass the Save Act and has not scheduled a vote.

Senate Democrats demonstrated against the act outside Congress in March saying that it threatens to disenfranchise millions by requiring in-person registration with a birth certificate or passport for documentation of citizenship.

The Save Act stands for Safeguard American Voter Eligibility.

Democrats say it is a bad solution in search of a problem. It has the support of about half of voters including 75% of supporters of President Trump.

Opponents say that non-citizen voting is very rare and statistically insignificant. There is no evidence that it has had any impact on any election.
