ANNAPOLIS, MD — Despite a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning, the St. Bonaventure baseball team was just about unable to squeeze out a victory over Navy, falling 5-4 on the road.
The Bonnies had spent the majority of the game, the first of a three-game series, chasing the Midshipmen. But in the seventh inning, a two RBI single from Anthony Fernandez that scored Joey Bruno and Brian Carrothers knotted up the contest at 3-3.
Unfortunately, a costly error that saw two runs come across for Navy in the bottom of the seventh put Bona behind yet again. And this time, there would be no comeback.
Alex Hebenstreit drove in another run in the eighth but, working out of a jam in each of the final two frames, Navy escaped with the narrow victory.
David James got the start on the mound and racked up six strikeouts over five innings. Joey Calabretti threw two scoreless frames in relief.

In the second game of the day, Houston got its offense going early as well, bringing across two runs in the top of the second frame. The Cougars added their final run of the game in the fifth.
