Alan R. “Hop” Oakley, loving husband, father, brother, and friend
Olean- Alan R. “Hop” Oakley of Olean, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the Olean General Hospital after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Alan was born in Olean on September 13, 1949, the son of the late Sibyl and James W. Oakley. On June 21, 1975, at St. John’s Church in Olean, he married the former Linda A. Langs, who predeceased him in 2004.
A 1967 graduate of Hinsdale Central School, Alan continued his education at Broome Tech, where he earned an associate’s degree, and subsequently obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from RIT.
Alan worked for ACME Electric / Tracewell as an electrical engineer for over 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Stephens Club, the Pulaski Club, and the Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and growing potted flowers. He also enjoyed golfing, the Buffalo Bills, and riding his motorcycle, later a trike. Alan would often enjoy spending his nights behind his house, sitting by the fire.
Alan is survived by his son Thomas M. Oakley; his siblings, Carol A. Crawforth of Olean, Kenneth L. (Carol) Oakley of Batavia, Stephen J. (Michele) Oakley of Ischua, and Sharon J. (Jim) Kelly of Olean; and his nieces and nephew.
He was predeceased by his wife, Linda, and his parents, Sibyl and James.
Friends will be received on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean, with a funeral service starting at 7 p.m. in the funeral home, with Bruce Levine of the First Presbyterian Church in Olean officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Hinsdale Fire Dept. or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
