WEDNESDAY ROUNDUP: Gators earn first playoff win in over three years; Salamanca takes to the Sectional Championship

PORT ALLEGANY, PA – Seeing the Falcons for the third time this season, the Port Allegany boy’s basketball team moved one step closer to a District 9 Class 2A championship berth, opening their postseason run with a 42-34 win over Coudersport. 

Jarrod Funk led all scorers on the night, ending with 14 points alongside three blocks and two assists while Liam Hawver and Chase Boyd both ended with eight points in the win. 

The win comes as Port’s first playoff victory in over three years, earning them a spot in the semifinals on Tuesday. There, the No. 4 Gators will see either No. 1 Clarion or No. 8 Brockway at a time and location yet to be decided.

ELLICOTTVILLE, NY – Outscoring the Eagles 17-5 in the fourth quarter, Portville tacked on an eleventh win as they set to finish up their regular season. 

Ava Scanlon and Emma Rhinehart led the way for the Panthers, each scoring a team-high nine points. Emily Scanlon finished with eight while Addison Isaman ended with seven. 

Portville has just one game left on their schedule. On Saturday, they will travel to Westfield for a noon season finale before setting their eyes on the Section VI playoffs

Indoor Track and Field

Salamanca: 10th of 15

Finishing out their season in the Section VI Championship meet, the Salamanca boy’s indoor track and field team found concrete evidence in progress as they doubled last years’ score at 25. 

The Warriors were led by Evan Spruce, who scored 10 points between the weight throw and the shot put. Xazavier Escobar broke his own school record in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.81.
