A water main break in the 800 block of North Union Street has led to a boil water notice for water users in the affected area, Olean Mayor Bill Aiello announced Wednesday afternoon.

The notice to boil water before consuming applies to about 25 users in the affected area around the 800 block of North Union Street, the mayor said in an email notice and on the city website. Those homes affected were notified by Water Department emoployees and door hangers if no one was home. The notice went out around 2:30 p.m.

“Effective immediately and for the next three days, all tap water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing baby formula must be boiled before use,” Aiello said.

  • Users in the area should bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute.
  • Cool and store: Let boiled water cool naturally and store in clean, covered containers.
  • Bottled water: Use commercially bottled water if available for drinking and food preparation.
  • Ice and beverages: Do not use ice made from tap water; discard existing ice. Use boiled or bottled water

for beverages.

  • Food preparation: Use boiled or bottled water for washing fruits and vegetables and for cooking.
  • Infants and medically vulnerable people: Use boiled or bottled water for infant formula and for those

with weakened immune systems.

  • Dishwashing: Use boiled water for rinsing dishes or run them through a dishwasher on a hot sanitize

cycle; otherwise wash with soap and boiled water.

  • Personal hygiene: Showering and bathing are generally allowed, but avoid swallowing tap water.
