OLEAN — Election Day for Olean mayoral candidates Amy Sherburne and Mayor Bill Aiello starts at 6 a.m. when polls open in the seven wards. Polls are open Tuesday until 9 p.m.
Aiello, who is seeking a fourth four-year term on the independent Lincoln Party line, is emphasizing his experience and accomplishments in his uphill battle against Sherburne, a political newcomer running on the Republican and Democratic lines, who is calling for change.
Sherburne, an Olean businesswoman, beat Aiello in the Republican primary and was endorsed by Democrats.
Early voting concluded Sunday with 1,028 voters casting ballots, including 689 in the city of Olean, according to the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections.
After nine days of early voting, 836 voters had cast ballots at Jamestown Community College in Olean and 192 at the Board of Elections office in Little Valley.
While the mayoral contest is the premier contest on the city ballot, there are also three council seats. Only in Ward 4, where Alderwoman Sonya McCall is being challenged by Alan Peters. McCall is running on the Democrat and Working Families lines, while Peters is on the Republican and Conservative lines.
Ward 2 Alderman Joseph Keary is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. Democrat Rychelle Weseman is not actively campaigning.

In Ward 5, Council President Vernon Robinson Jr., is unopposed on the Democrat and Working Families party lines, as is incumbent David Anastasia who is running on the Democrat and Working Families lines.
There are only two countywide offices on the ballot — district attorney and coroner. Both are unopposed.
County Attorney Ashley Smith for district attorney on the Republican and Conservative lines to succeed District Attorney Lori P. Rieman, who did not seek re-election. Also, Kevin M. O’Rourke is unopposed on the Republican line for re-election as coroner.
In the City of Salamanca, City Court Judge Matthew Swenson is unopposed on the Democratic, Republican and Conservative lines.
